Is your baby achieving FULL sleep cycles? Why does it matter?

Newborns spend 50% of their day in REM sleep, and you can usually tell by their silly faces. Babies so young lack the muscular paralysis that adults have when entering this stage of sleep, so their limbs are busy and you can catch grimaces and great big smiles ![]()
This percentage of time spent in REM sleep is crucial for brain development! Lack of both REM and non-REM sleep can negatively impact more than you may think;
emotional regulation
loss of appetite
face processing
language development
ability to focus
The HEALTHIEST sleep goes long uninterrupted and completes full sleep cycles. Infant sleep cycles are typically 40-50 mins. The “4-month sleep regression” is a thing because at 4 months, baby sleep cycles start to look more organized and follow each stage closer. So rather, regressions are truly PROgressions, as the the brain and body are developing a more mature sleep pattern. The trouble appears when the cycle is over, baby comes back to consciousness and can’t transition into a new cycle without an external interruption like.. rocking or feeding, replacing the pacifier, mom laying next to or in someone’s arms.

If you’re stuck with any of those, or want more understanding of where your baby might be regarding nighttime awakenings I can help you ![]()
